UCT Autism ACSEPT

The aim of the University of Cape Town’s Autism Applied Cognitive & Social Emotion Psychology Team is to promote autism awareness and knowledge through high-quality basic and applied research.  This site contains general information about autism spectrum disorder, information about current and previous autism-related research at the University of Cape Town, and links to useful websites for parents or individuals with autism.

To participate in current research, please see Open Studies.

Please note that we are primarily a research unit. We currently do not provide any diagnostic or intervention services. Please contact Autism Western Cape at admin@awc.org.za or Autism South Africa at http://aut2know.co.za/ for information about service providers.

Where are you advertising this research to reach as wide an ASD community as possible?

    • Hi Kim,

Currently we have sent out research adverts to Autism South Africa, Autism Western Cape and clinicians working in the Cape Town area. Your suggestions or help with further advertising is absolutely welcome though!

Hello, I am currently doing my B.Ed degree final year and I would like to do my honours in Autism please help.

    • Hi Prudence. We don’t offer an honors in Autism specifically, unfortunately. We have a generally psychology honors degree at UCT (a BSocSci (hon) degree), and students then pick a research supervisor based on their research interests. If an Autism study is available, or you are able to find a supervisor in the department who is keen for research in this area, then you could conduct a research study. To do this, you need to be accepted into the UCT honors program, and to then send a research idea to the relevant possible supervisor to see if they would be keen to conduct the study with you.

I am interested in doing autism studies at hounors level.Pls help me with the information. Thanks

    • Hi Nokulunga, I’m afraid we don’t conduct a specific honors degree in Autism. We have a generally psychology honors degree, and students are then able to conduct a research study in their area of interest in they can find a supervisor in the department who is keen to conduct the research. The honors year is a short one though, so it is often best to join a group with an ongoing study. I would advise that you contact the universities where you would like to apply, and then contact the possible supervisors with your research idea to see if it would be possible to conduct your study.
